Tutor

Erena Koopu

Since childhood, art has played a major role in my life.  It is my true passion and has been the motivation for my pursuit of higher education, and has shaped the pathway to my vocational choices. I have been privileged to have learnt from some of the finest art exponents in Aotearoa, and this knowledge has then been applied to my own art and teaching practices.

I am inspired by rangatahi and their perspectives on the world in which they live. To this end, I have enjoyed the challenges, rewards and fulfillment that have come with teaching at college level. Being able to deliver the curriculum in a te reo Māori total immersion context has further enriched my personal and professional experience and educator.

Most recently, my life as a Tutor in the tertiary sector, has allowed me to explore art in a completely different framework, encompassing all aspects of te Ao Māori to an audience that may have little to no experience of art and all its related protocols from a completely Māori world view.

The support of my whanau, iwi, hapū keep me grounded, focused and moving
in a direction where I feel my skills are most needed.
